How is lubrication performed in open chain systems?

Lubrication in open chain systems is a critical maintenance step to extend chain life, reduce wear, and ensure the efficient operation of the production line. Lubrication is especially important for open chains, meaning chains that are exposed and without a protective casing, because they are directly affected by environmental factors.

1. Proper Lubricant Selection

  • Food-grade chain oil: Must be NSF H1 or FDA compliant for food production lines.
  • High-temperature chain oil: Should be used in ovens or high-temperature lines.
  • EP additive chain oil: Preferred for chains operating under heavy load and high pressure.
  • Water and chemical resistant oil: Necessary for chains near cleaning or washing lines.

2. Lubrication Methods

A. Spray Lubrication

  • Sprayed evenly over the pins, bearings, and rollers of the chain.
  • Advantage: Fast application and oil reaching all surfaces.
  • Disadvantage: Excessive spray → residue build-up.

B. Brush Lubrication

  • Oil is applied to the chain with a brush.
  • Advantage: Controlled and targeted lubrication.
  • Disadvantage: Time-consuming for large chains.

C. Immersion Method

  • The chain is submerged in an oil bath.
  • Advantage: All chain links and pins are fully lubricated.
  • Disadvantage: May not be practical for large lines.

3. Lubrication Frequency and Quantity

  • Determined by chain type, temperature, load, and environmental conditions.
  • Low temperature and light load: 1-2 times a week may be sufficient.
  • High temperature and heavy load: Daily or shift-based lubrication may be required.
  • Excessive lubrication → residue build-up, insufficient lubrication → wear and friction.

4. Maintenance and Control

  • The chain must be clean and dry; dirt, dust, and old oil must be removed.
  • Chain tension and alignment should be checked regularly.
  • Wear, deformation, or rust formation should be monitored.

5. Additional Precautions

  • Open chains are exposed to external factors → pay attention to dust, moisture, chemical, and temperature changes.
  • If used in a food line, records and controls compliant with hygiene standards must be kept.
