Dosing pump calibration is the process of aligning the pump's actual flow rate and pressure values with the measured or desired values. Calibration ensures both chemical savings and process accuracy.
1. Importance of Calibration
- Ensures the pump dispenses the correct amount of chemical.
- Maintains product quality and process efficiency.
- Prevents cost and equipment risks due to over or under-dosing.
2. Required Materials
- Weighing device or precision scales (measurement in liters/hour or grams).
- Measuring cup or collector tank.
- Timer (seconds/minutes).
- Pump operating manual and setting parameters.
3. Calibration Steps
Step 1: Preparing the Pump
- Check all valves in the system before starting the pump.
- Secure chemical hoses and connections.
- If necessary, fill the pump with water or an appropriate test fluid.
Step 2: Taking Measurements
- Operate the pump for a specific duration (e.g., 1 minute).
- Measure the fluid discharged from the pump in a weighing container or collector tank.
- Record the measured volume or weight.
Step 3: Calculating Flow Rate
- Flow Rate (L/h or g/h) = Measured quantity ÷ Operating time.
- Example: 500 mL of fluid measured in 1 minute → Flow Rate = 0.5 L / (1/60 h) = 30 L/h
Step 4: Adjusting Settings
- Correct the flow rate using the flow rate adjustment knob or software parameter on the pump to match the target flow rate.
- Restart the pump and take measurements again.
- Repeat several times if necessary.
Step 5: Recording and Monitoring
- Record calibration results.
- Repeat calibration at regular intervals (monthly or based on production intensity).
- Integrate into an automatic data recording system if necessary.
4. Points to Consider
- If calibrating with chemicals, PPE usage and safety precautions are essential.
- Ensure there are no leaks on the pump or hose.
- During calibration, pump flow rate, pressure, and hose diameter should be considered.
