Greasing errors in industrial machinery

1. Over-greasing

  • Excess grease can become trapped within the bearing, causing increased heat and friction.
  • This is particularly problematic in high-speed bearings.
  • Result: Energy loss, bearing overheating, grease escaping the bearing.

2. Under-greasing

  • Insufficient lubrication leads to metal-to-metal contact.
  • Result: Wear, pitting, premature bearing failure.

3. Incorrect grease selection

  • Using the wrong NLGI, viscosity, or base oil:
    • Too viscous grease for high speeds → overheating
    • Low temperature resistance → melting or bleeding
    • Incorrect additives → damage to bearing surface
  • Result: Shortened bearing life.

4. Grease contamination

  • Dust, dirt, water, or chemicals mix into the grease.
  • Result: Increased friction, accelerated wear, grease degradation.

5. Incorrect application method

  • Excessive or insufficient manual application
  • Incorrect dosage or blockages in central systems
  • Result: Irregular lubrication, hot spots on the bearing surface.

6. Inappropriate lubrication interval

  • Too long an interval → grease ages and loses its lubricating effect
  • Too short an interval → unnecessary lubrication, excessive heating

7. Ignoring high temperatures or environmental factors

  • If ambient temperature or heat generated by the motor/machine is not considered, the grease can melt or bleed, rendering lubrication ineffective.
