1. Production volume (most important criterion)

  • Mold life is generally planned based on the number of cycles
  • Example approach:
    • 50,000–100,000 cycles → light maintenance
    • 100,000–500,000 cycles → medium maintenance
    • 500,000+ cycles → comprehensive maintenance / overhaul

2. Product and material type

  • Glass-fiber reinforced or abrasive plastics → shorter maintenance interval
  • Clean and low-fill materials → longer maintenance interval
  • Materials prone to burning, gassing, or carbon deposition → more frequent cleaning

3. Operating conditions

  • High temperature and pressure → more frequent maintenance needed
  • Long cycle times and mass production → increases wear rate
  • Cooling system quality → directly affects maintenance interval

4. Mold design and precision

  • Multi-cavity molds are more sensitive
  • Products with tight tolerances require more frequent checks
