How to choose food-grade grease?

The selection of food-grade grease in food production facilities is a critical decision for both the longevity of the equipment and the assurance of food safety. Here's a detailed guide:


1. Selection Criteria

A. Food Grade Approval

  • Must have NSF H1, FDA 21 CFR 178.3570, or EU food contact approval.
  • Food-grade certified grease must be used on all equipment with a risk of food contact.

B. Operating Temperature

  • Normal temperature greases: Used for applications between room temperature and 120°C.
  • High-temperature greases: Suitable for ovens, cooking, and filling lines between 120–250°C.

C. Material Compatibility

  • Metals: Must be compatible with stainless steel, aluminum, and bronze.
  • Seals and plastic parts: Should not react with materials such as silicone, nitrile, PTFE.

D. Load and Pressure Resistance

  • For bearings operating under heavy load and high speed, high-pressure resistant grease should be selected.
  • A lighter consistency grease is sufficient for equipment with light loads and low speeds.

E. Chemical Resistance

  • Must be resistant to water, steam, and cleaning chemicals.
  • Must be suitable for use in CIP (Clean-In-Place) systems.

F. Viscosity and Consistency

  • The correct consistency should be chosen according to the equipment type:
    • Chains and gears → more fluid, adhesive grease
    • Bearings and bushings → medium consistency multi-purpose grease
    • Sealed machines → soft consistency grease

  • Incorrect viscosity → bearing or chain wear

4. Storage and Shelf Life

  • Store in a cool, dry, and dark environment.
  • Unopened packaging has a shelf life of 2–5 years (varies by product).
  • Consume within a short period after opening.
