Choosing the Right Lubricant for Food Safety

In food production facilities, the right lubricant selection is a critical step for both efficient equipment operation and ensuring food safety. Incorrect lubricant selection can lead to machine failure and food contamination. Here is a detailed guide:

1. Basic Principles

  1. Food Grade Approval
    • Use lubricants approved as NSF H1 or FDA 21 CFR 178.3570.
    • Safe for all surfaces with a risk of food contact.
  2. Appropriate Type and Formula
    • Bearings and bushings: Medium consistency multi-purpose grease or oil
    • Chains and gears: Adhesive chain oil
    • Sealed machinery and pistons/valves: Soft consistency food grade grease
  3. Operating Temperature and Conditions
    • Normal temperature (room – 120°C) or high temperature (120 – 250°C) products
    • Durable products for equipment exposed to humidity, steam, or CIP systems
  4. Material Compatibility
    • Lubricants that do not react with seals, plastic, and metal parts
    • Must be compatible with silicone, nitrile, or PTFE seals in special lines
  5. Chemical Resistance
    • Must be resistant to water, steam, and cleaning chemicals
    • Must be safely usable in CIP systems

2. Examples by Application Area

Equipment Recommended Lubricant Feature
Bearings Food grade multi-purpose grease NSF H1/FDA approved, general bearing protection
Chains and gears Food grade chain oil Adhesive, water and cleaner resistant
Sealed machinery Soft food grade grease Seal compatible, low hardness
Piston/valve mechanisms Food grade piston/valve grease Food contact safe
Oven/baking lines High-temperature food grade grease Resistant to 200–250°C

3. Risks of Incorrect Lubricant Selection

  • Non-food grade lubricant → food contamination
  • Lubricant not suitable for temperature → melting, leaking, equipment damage
  • Material incompatibility → degradation of seals or plastic parts
  • Incorrect viscosity → wear in bearings or chains

4. Storage and Shelf Life

  • Should be stored in a cool, dry, and dark place
  • Shelf life of 2–5 years in unopened packaging (varies by product)
  • Should be consumed soon after opening
  • Should be kept away from moisture and dirt
