Mold cleaning is the process of controlled removal of resin, oil, carbon, and dirt residues accumulated on the mold surface during plastic injection and similar production processes. When done correctly, it both improves product quality and extends mold life.
How to clean molds?
1. Preparation and safety
- Machine is stopped and mold is opened safely
- Energy and hydraulic systems are secured
- Appropriate PPE such as gloves and goggles are used
2. Removing coarse dirt from the surface
- Plastic residues are cleaned with a soft plastic spatula
- Loose particles are removed with compressed air
- Hard and abrasive tools are not used
3. Chemical cleaning
- Apply appropriate mold cleaner spray or solvent
- Wait a short time for the dirt to dissolve
- Resin and oil layers are softened
4. Soft mechanical cleaning
- Wipe the surface with a microfiber cloth or soft brush
- Carbon deposits are carefully cleaned
- Vent channels are opened with special thin tools
5. Detailed inspection
- Inspect mold surface, ventilation channels, and cavities
- Check for any remaining dirt residue
6. Protective application
- After cleaning, apply protective oil or silicone-based film
- Protect the mold against moisture and corrosion
Points to consider
- Wire brushes and sandpaper should not be used
- Incorrect solvents can damage the mold surface
- Excessive chemical use should be avoided
- Regular periodic cleaning should be done
