How should metal cleaners be used in terms of occupational safety?

Metal cleaners contain powerful chemicals used to remove oil, dirt, oxides, and rust, thus they must be used carefully and in accordance with procedures for occupational safety. Improper use can cause skin burns, respiratory irritation, fire risk, and environmental damage.

1. Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

This is the most fundamental safety precaution when using metal cleaner.

  • Chemical-resistant gloves
  • Protective goggles or face shield
  • Appropriate mask against solvent vapor (with A2/P2 filter, etc.)
  • Protective work clothing or apron

Purpose: To prevent skin and respiratory contact

2. Ventilation Requirements

Many metal cleaners contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

  • Strong ventilation must be provided in enclosed spaces
  • Local exhaust ventilation systems must be used
  • Vapor accumulation must be prevented

Accumulation in enclosed spaces increases the risk of poisoning

3. Product Labels and Safety Information

Every product must be examined before use.

  • MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) must be read
  • Hazard pictograms must be taken into account
  • Usage instructions must be strictly followed

4. Fire and Explosion Risk

Some metal cleaners are flammable.

  • Keep away from open flames and sparks
  • No smoking
  • Electrical equipment must be checked for spark risk
  • Appropriate fire extinguishers must be kept ready (CO₂, foam, etc.)

5. Correct Application Method

Incorrect application is risky for both health and equipment.

  • Spray, brush, or dipping method must be chosen correctly
  • Avoid excessive chemical use
  • Avoid eye and skin contact
  • The surface must be cleaned and dried after application

6. Storage and Transportation

Safe storage of chemicals is very important.

  • Must be stored in original packaging
  • Protect from sunlight and high temperatures
  • Keep away from food and beverages
  • Keep out of reach of children

7. Emergency Measures

Be prepared for potential accidents.

  • Eye contact: Rinse with plenty of water and seek medical attention
  • Skin contact: Wash with soap and water
  • Inhalation: Move to fresh air
  • Spill: Clean with appropriate absorbent material
