How is rust prevented on metal surfaces?

Preventing rust on metal surfaces is primarily based on cutting off or slowing down the metal's contact with oxygen and moisture. For this purpose, both surface protection methods and correct material and maintenance applications are used together.

1. Surface Coating and Paint

Insulating the metal surface from the external environment is the most common method.

  • Epoxy paint: Provides strong chemical and water resistance
  • Polyurethane paint: High UV and outdoor resistance
  • Galvanized coating: Provides electrochemical protection with a zinc layer
  • Powder coating: Creates a homogeneous and durable coating

Purpose: To cut off metal-air/water contact

2. Rust Inhibiting Oils and Sprays

Provides temporary or semi-permanent protection.

  • Forms a thin protective film
  • Keeps moisture and oxygen away from the metal surface
  • Used during storage and shipping
  • Can also reduce friction in moving parts

3. Material Selection

Correct metal selection greatly reduces rust formation.

  • Stainless steel (especially 304 and 316)
  • Aluminum alloys
  • Bronze and some copper alloys

Correct material = less maintenance required

4. Cathodic Protection

Especially used for marine and large metal structures.

  • Zinc, magnesium or aluminum anodes are used
  • Anodes sacrifice themselves to protect the main metal
  • Common in ship hulls and pipelines

5. Moisture and Water Control

Moisture is the biggest trigger for rust.

  • Drainage design to prevent water accumulation
  • Closed and dry storage
  • Dehumidification systems (desiccant)
  • Regular drying and ventilation

6. Regular Maintenance

Continuity of protective systems is important.

  • Surface cleaning (salt, dirt, chemical residues)
  • Prompt repair of paint damage
  • Early cleaning of rust initiation
  • Periodic inspection plan

7. Preventing Galvanic Corrosion

Contact between different metals can accelerate rusting.

  • Using insulation materials
  • Choosing compatible metals
  • Careful assembly in humid environments
