Stainless steel surface cleaning guide

Stainless steel surface cleaning should be performed using the correct methods to both maintain its aesthetic appearance and prolong the material's corrosion resistance. Incorrect cleaning practices can lead to scratches, discoloration, and even localized rusting (pitting corrosion) on the surface.

1. Daily Surface Cleaning

Simple methods are sufficient for light dirt and dust.

  • Use warm water and a soft cloth
  • Neutral pH soap solutions are preferred
  • Dry with a microfiber cloth

Objective: clean the surface without scratching

2. Oil and Fingerprint Cleaning

This is one of the most common problems seen on stainless steel.

  • Alcohol-based cleaners
  • Fast-evaporating solvents
  • Specialized stainless steel cleaners

Always wipe dry after cleaning

3. Heavy Dirt and Industrial Residues

Stronger cleaning is required in production environments.

  • Alkaline industrial cleaners
  • Degreasers
  • Low-pressure steam cleaning if necessary

4. Weld and Heat Stain Cleaning

Special treatment is required for discoloration that occurs after welding.

  • Passivation chemicals (acid-based gel/liquid)
  • Electrochemical cleaning
  • Light mechanical polishing

Objective: to reform the chromium oxide layer

5. Mechanical Cleaning Methods

Can damage the surface if not used carefully.

  • Soft wire brush (stainless steel compatible)
  • Sandpaper (very fine grit)
  • Scotch-Brite pads

Carbon steel brushes should not be used (risk of contamination)

6. What to Avoid in Cleaning

  • Chlorine-containing cleaning products (cause pitting corrosion)
  • Abrasive sponges and harsh brushes
  • Steel wool (can cause rust contamination)
  • Cleaning with dirty or salty water

7. Protective Applications

The surface should be protected after cleaning.

  • Stainless steel polishes
  • Thin protective oil films
  • Regular maintenance plan

8. Occupational Safety and Hygiene

  • Wear gloves and eye protection when using chemicals
  • Ensure ventilation in enclosed spaces
  • Check product MSDS information
