How to choose a plastic injection mold release agent?

The most important criteria when choosing a plastic injection mold release agent are the type of plastic raw material used, whether the part will be painted afterwards, mold temperature, and cycle time. Silicone-based products provide stronger release, while silicone-free products are more suitable for painting and bonding processes.

Considerations when making a selection

  • Type of raw material
    • Silicone-based products are commonly used for standard plastics like PP and PE.
    • Silicone-free products are preferred for sensitive plastics like PC, PMMA, and ABS.
  • Post-processing needs
    • If the part is to be painted, coated, or bonded, a silicone-free release agent should be used.
    • Silicone-based products can leave a film on the surface, which may cause painting defects.
  • Mold temperature
    • For molds operating at high temperatures, a product with high heat resistance should be chosen.
    • Some silicone-based products can withstand temperatures up to +300°C.
  • Production speed and cycle time
    • For mass production, products with long cycle durability provide a cost advantage.
    • Products that can produce multiple impressions with a single application are preferred.
  • Surface quality
    • If a shiny and non-marking surface is desired, low-residue formulations should be preferred.
    • Products that form a thin film provide more homogeneous results.
