In plastic injection molds, carbon buildup (burnt plastic residue) occurs due to material degradation under high temperature and pressure. This buildup causes surface defects, gas problems, and a decrease in part quality. The cleaning process must be carried out carefully and controllably.
How is carbon buildup cleaned?
1. Suitable carbon remover chemicals
- Special carbon remover products are used
- Chemically softens burnt plastic and resin residues
- Types that do not damage the mold surface should be preferred
2. Chemical dwell time
- The solvent is left on the surface for a short period
- Cleaning is performed after the carbon layer is softened
- Excessive dwell time can damage the surface
3. Gentle mechanical cleaning
- Microfiber cloth or soft nylon brush is used
- Thick carbon layers can be carefully removed with a plastic spatula
- Wire brushes and sandpaper should never be used
4. Temperature-controlled cleaning
- Carbon dissolves more easily when the mold is brought to a warm level
- Avoid excessively hot or cold surfaces
5. Compressed air and detailed cleaning
- Vents (ventilation channels) must be cleaned
- Compressed air should be used carefully; dirt should not be pushed into internal areas
6. Post-cleaning protection
- After the surface is cleaned, a protective oil or silicone-based film is applied
- This delays the re-formation of carbon
