How is bearing grease selected?

1. Determine bearing and operating conditions

  • Bearing type: Ball, roller, needle, etc.
  • Rotational speed (rpm) and DN value (DN = bearing diameter (mm) × rpm).
  • Load type: Light, medium or heavy load.
  • Temperature range: Operating and maximum temperature.
  • Environmental factors: Humidity, dust, chemical effects.

2. Select the basic properties of the grease

  • Base oil (mineral/synthetic):
    • For high speed and temperature, synthetic-based greases are preferred.
  • Thickener:
    • Lithium, lithium complex, aluminum complex are commonly used in bearings.
  • Additives:
    • Anti-wear, antioxidant, EP additives, electrical insulation (in inverter motors).

3. NLGI and viscosity

  • NLGI grade: 0–2 (lower for high speeds, medium for low speeds).
  • ISO VG (base oil viscosity): Should be selected according to speed and temperature.
    • Low speed: VG 100–220
    • High speed: VG 32–100

4. Grease quantity and application method

  • Correct quantity: 30–50% of the bearing free space.
  • Application method: Manual greasing, centralized system, drip lubrication or circulating oil lubrication.
  • Over-greasing leads to overheating, under-greasing leads to premature wear.

5. Summary criteria

Feature Recommendation
Base oil Synthetic or mineral, synthetic preferred for high speed and temperature
Thickener Lithium, lithium complex, aluminum complex
NLGI 0–2 (depending on speed and load)
ISO VG 32–220 (depending on speed and temperature)
Additives Anti-wear, antioxidant, low conductivity (inverter motors)
Application Correct quantity, appropriate method (manual/centralized/circulating)
