Safety Procedures in Water Treatment Chemicals

1. General Safety Precautions

  • Training and Instructions: All personnel must be trained on the properties of chemicals, usage instructions, and emergency procedures.
  • Labeling and MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet): Label all chemical containers correctly and keep MSDSs accessible.
  • Proper Storage: Store chemicals in their original containers, in a well-ventilated, cool, and dry area. Some chemicals (e.g., sodium hypochlorite) are sensitive to light and heat.
  • Mixing Risks: Do not mix chemicals randomly. Especially when chlorine and acidic solutions combine, toxic gases can be released.

2. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Gloves: Use chemical-resistant nitrile or PVC gloves.
  • Eye Protection: Use safety goggles or a face shield against chemical splashes.
  • Clothing: Long-sleeved workwear or chemical-resistant apron.
  • Footwear: Chemical-resistant boots.
  • Respiratory: Appropriate masks for dusty or gaseous chemicals (e.g., dust mask, gas filter).

3. Operation and Handling Safety

  • Dosing: Use chemicals at recommended concentrations and methods.
  • Mixing and Dissolving: When preparing chemical solutions, always add chemical to water, not water to chemical. This prevents explosions and splashes.
  • Ventilation: The area must be well-ventilated, especially when gases like chlorine and ozone are used.

4. Emergency Procedures

  • Eye or Skin Contact:
    • Rinse with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes.
    • Seek medical attention if necessary.
  • Inhalation: Go to fresh air and seek medical help if necessary.
  • Ingestion: Do not try to vomit; contact emergency services and show them the chemical's MSDS.
  • Spill:
    • Clean up small spills with an absorbent appropriate for the chemical type.
    • For large spills, evacuate the area, secure the surroundings, and notify authorities.

5. Waste and Environmental Safety

  • Neutralize chemical waste properly or hand it over to licensed companies.
  • Do not discharge directly into sewers or natural water sources.
  • Empty packaging completely, leave the label visible, and recycle or dispose of appropriately.

6. Recommendations for Specific Chemicals

  • Chlorine (sodium hypochlorite, gas chlorine): Corrosive and respiratory irritant; good ventilation and face protection are essential.
  • Acids (sulfuric, hydrochloric): Corrodes metal and skin; be careful when diluting with water.
  • Bases (sodium hydroxide, lime): Serious risk of skin and eye irritation.
  • Coagulants (aluminum sulfate, iron salts): Can be irritating if inhaled as dust.
