Food-Grade Lubricants

Food-grade lubricants are oils and greases that can be safely used in all equipment in food production facilities that have or may have a risk of contact with food. These products are critical for both food safety and equipment efficiency.

1. Definition and Features

  • Food Grade / Food Safe: Not harmful to human health even if accidentally contaminated with food.
  • Certified: NSF H1 or FDA 21 CFR 178.3570 approved.
  • Various Forms: Liquid oil, thickened grease, chain oil.
  • Areas of Use: Bearings, chains, gears, sealed machines, piston and valve mechanisms.

2. Types

Type Area of Use Feature
NSF H1 Grease Bearings, chains, sealed machines Safe if there is a risk of food contact
High-Temperature Food Grade Grease Ovens, baking lines Resistant up to 200–250°C
Food Grade Chain Oil Conveyor chains Adhesive and water-resistant
Soft Food Grade Grease Pistons, valves, sealed machines Suitable for sensitive mechanisms, low hardness
Multi-Purpose Food Grade Grease General use Medium consistency, resistant to standard temperatures

3. Difference Between NSF H1 and H2

  • NSF H1: Lubricants that can come into contact with food; safe and certified.
  • NSF H2: Lubricants that do not come into contact with food; not suitable for contact.

4. Importance

  1. Food Safety: Minimizes the risk of chemical contamination.
  2. HACCP / GMP Compliance: Ensures compliance in audits.
  3. Equipment Protection: Protects bearings, chains, and gears with proper viscosity and consistency.
  4. Consumer Confidence: Supports hygiene and safety standards in food production.
