Grease selection in food processing machinery

In food production machinery, grease selection is crucial for both ensuring efficient equipment operation and maintaining food safety. Incorrect grease selection can lead to machine breakdowns, production losses, and food contamination.


1. Criteria to Consider for Grease Selection

A. Food Grade Approval

  • Must have NSF H1, FDA 21 CFR 178.3570, or EU food contact approval.
  • Food grade grease must be used for equipment that comes into contact with food.

B. Operating Temperature

  • Normal temperature greases: Suitable for equipment operating between room temperature and 120°C.
  • High-temperature greases: Preferred for ovens, cooking, and filling lines operating between 120–250°C.

C. Material Compatibility

  • Metals: Must be compatible with stainless steel and aluminum.
  • Seals and plastic parts: Should not react with materials such as silicone, nitrile, or PTFE.

D. Load and Pressure Resistance

  • High-pressure resistant grease should be selected for bearings operating under heavy loads and at high speeds.
  • Lighter consistency greases are sufficient for low-load and light applications.

E. Hygiene and Rinseability

  • Must be easily rinseable during cleaning and leave no residue.
  • Greases suitable for CIP systems should be preferred.

3. Risks of Incorrect Grease Use

  • Non-food grade grease → food contamination
  • Grease not resistant to high temperatures → melting, dripping, and equipment damage
  • Material incompatibility → degradation of seals and plastic parts
  • Incorrect viscosity → wear on bearings or chains

4. Storage and Shelf Life

  • Store in a cool, dry, and dark place.
  • Unopened packaging has a shelf life of 2–5 years (varies by product).
  • Consume within a short period after opening.
