1. High temperature and oxidation
- If grease is exposed to high temperatures for a long time, the base oil oxidizes.
- Result: Grease hardens and its fluidity decreases.
2. Incompatible grease mixture
- If greases with different base oils or thickeners are mixed:
- Grease clumps, hardens
- Cannot form a proper film in the bearing
3. Contamination
- Dust, dirt, water, or chemicals can damage the grease structure.
- Grease hardens or decomposes → lubrication effect is lost.
4. Aging and long-term storage
- Grease stored for a long time, especially those with natural thickeners (mineral-based), can harden.
- Base oil can evaporate or its chemical structure can deteriorate.
5. Incorrect NLGI or viscosity selection
- An excessively stiff NLGI grade or high viscosity can prevent the grease from flowing in the bearing in incorrect applications, making it act as if it has hardened.
