How does grease incompatibility damage bearings?

1. Mixing different base oils

  • When mineral-based and synthetic-based greases are mixed, chemical incompatibility occurs.
  • Result: Grease hardens, its fluidity deteriorates, and its lubricating effect on the bearing surface is lost.

2. Incompatible thickeners

  • When lithium, lithium complex, aluminum or calcium-based thickeners are mixed:
    • Grease separates or clumps
    • No uniform film forms within the bearing
  • Result: Friction increases, wear accelerates.

3. Wrong viscosity or NLGI

  • Too viscous grease → increased heating and friction at high speeds
  • Too thin grease → cannot provide adequate lubrication under heavy loads
  • Wrong NLGI → grease overflows within the bearing or becomes ineffective

4. Additive incompatibility

  • If EP, AW, antioxidant, and other additives are incompatible with each other:
    • Grease chemically degrades
    • Bearing surface is unprotected, corrosion and wear accelerate

5. Practical consequences

  • Overheating and friction
  • Premature wear, pitting, and cracks in bearing elements
  • Decrease in energy efficiency
  • Significantly shortened bearing life
