Conveyor Chain Maintenance Guide

The conveyor chain maintenance guide includes critical steps to extend chain life, reduce friction, and ensure uninterrupted operation of the production line. Here is a detailed guide:

1. Regular Cleaning

  • Dust, dirt, oil, and residues on the chain should be cleaned regularly.
  • For food lines, CIP-compatible or food-grade cleaning products should be preferred.
  • After cleaning, the chain must be completely dried; otherwise, rusting and lubrication problems will occur.

2. Correct Lubrication

A. Lubrication Type

  • Food-grade chain oil: NSF H1 or FDA compliant
  • High-temperature chain oil: For ovens and high-temperature lines

B. Lubrication Method

  • Application with spray or brush: Chain pins, bearings, and links should be lubricated evenly
  • Immersion method: Provides quick and comprehensive lubrication in large industrial lines

C. Lubrication Frequency

  • To be determined according to production speed, temperature, and load conditions
  • Too frequent → residue accumulation, too infrequent → wear

3. Chain Tension and Alignment

  • The chain should be neither too tight nor too loose.
  • Incorrect tension → wear, energy loss, and mechanical failures
  • Chains and sprockets should be properly aligned.

4. Wear and Damage Control

  • Chain links, pins, and bearings should be checked regularly.
  • The chain should be replaced if excessive wear or deformation is observed.
  • Sprocket and pulley alignment should also be checked.

5. Temperature and Environmental Conditions

  • High-temperature chain oil should be used in high-temperature lines.
  • Water-resistant chain oil should be preferred for chains exposed to water and cleaning chemicals.
  • Must be protected from excessive moisture and dust.

6. Recording and Planning

  • Lubrication, cleaning, and maintenance dates should be recorded.
  • Periodic maintenance plans should be created.
  • Procedures appropriate for hygiene protocols should be applied in food lines.
