1. Main Causes of Temperature-Induced Bearing Failures

  1. Incorrect grease or oil use
    • Standard grease breaks down at high temperatures → increased friction and wear.
  2. Overheating
    • Bearings continuously exposed to high temperatures in ovens, sterilization, or cooking lines.
  3. Insufficient lubrication
    • If grease is not applied regularly and in the correct amount, heat increases due to metal-to-metal contact.
  4. Dirt and contamination
    • Water, steam, or chemical cleaning residues cause grease degradation and bearing heating.
  5. Incorrect mounting or alignment
    • If the bearing is incorrectly mounted axially or radially, friction increases and temperature rises.

A. Correct Grease / Oil Selection

  • High-Temperature Food Grade Grease: Resistant up to 200–250°C
  • NSF H1 Certified: Safe if there is a risk of food contact
  • Pay Attention to Viscosity: Suitable consistency for bearing and temperature conditions

B. Regular Maintenance and Monitoring

  • Bearing temperature and noise should be monitored with thermometers or sensors
  • Maintenance intervals should be planned according to high-temperature conditions
  • Grease quantity and change time should be checked

C. Equipment Design and Installation

  • Positioning bearings and housings in areas with good heat dissipation
  • Proper alignment and axial mounting
  • If necessary, use cooling systems or heat protectors

D. Cleaning and Hygiene

  • Protection of bearing and housing areas with grease after CIP systems
  • Preventing water, chemical, or food residues from contacting the bearing

E. Operational Measures

  • Monitoring temperature limits on production control panels
  • Avoiding overloads
  • Ensuring bearings are not exposed to temperature stress during production line shutdowns
