1. Base oil selection
- Must be resistant to high pressure and have low compressibility.

Mineral or synthetic base oils can be used:
- For high temperatures and heavy loads, synthetic PAO or ester greases offer advantages.
2. Thickener
- For heavy loads, lithium complex, calcium complex, or aluminum complex are preferred.
- The thickener ensures the mechanical stability of the grease and its ability to maintain its form under load.
3. Viscosity and NLGI
- NLGI 2 or 2+ is suitable for most heavy load applications.
- Base oil viscosity should be selected according to load and temperature.
- Too low viscosity → inadequate lubrication under heavy load
- Too high viscosity → friction and heating
4. Additives
- Anti-wear (AW/EP) additives prevent metal-to-metal contact under load.
- Antioxidant and high-temperature stability extend bearing life.
- Water-repellent additives may be preferred for damp or dirty environments.
5. Application and quantity
- Grease fill of approximately 30–50% of the bearing clearance.
- Over-greasing → heating and energy loss
- Insufficient greasing → wear and premature failure
6. Practical tips
- Heavy load and low speed → high NLGI and viscosity
- Heavy load and high speed → EP additive, low to medium viscosity grease
- Centralized or circulating greasing systems offer advantages
