How to choose grease viscosity?

1. Bearing speed and DN value

  • DN = bearing diameter (mm) × rpm
  • High speed (DN > 50,000–100,000): Low-viscosity greases are preferred (0.01–0.1 Pa·s).
  • Low/medium speed: Higher viscosity greases are used.

2. Load and type

  • Light load: Low or medium viscosity is sufficient
  • Heavy load: Higher viscosity or EP additive greases are recommended
  • Shock loads: Medium-high viscosity provides bearing protection

3. Operating temperature

  • Base oil viscosity should be selected according to temperature:
    • Low temperature (<0°C): Low viscosity, fluid grease
    • Medium temperature (20–120°C): Medium viscosity
    • High temperature (>120°C): Synthetic and low-viscosity greases are preferred

4. Environmental conditions

  • If there is moisture, water, dust or chemical effects, water-resistant or specially formulated greases are needed.
  • Environmental effects should also be considered in viscosity selection.

5. Practical tips

  • High speed → low viscosity
  • Heavy load → high viscosity
  • Very high viscosity causes heating and energy loss at high speeds
  • Very low viscosity provides insufficient lubrication under heavy loads
