Why is viscosity important in metalworking fluids?

In metalworking fluids (cutting oils/coolants), viscosity is the fluid's resistance to flow and directly impacts performance. Therefore, it is a critical parameter.

Key reasons why viscosity is important:

1. Lubrication performance
Sufficient viscosity forms a thin but durable lubricating film between the tool and the workpiece. This film:

  • Reduces friction
  • Decreases tool wear
  • Improves surface quality

2. Cooling and heat transfer balance

  • Too high viscosity → flow becomes difficult, heat removal weakens
  • Too low viscosity → film not strong enough, friction increases
Correct viscosity balances both heat transfer and lubrication.

3. Chip removal
Appropriate viscosity:

  • Removes chips from the cutting zone
  • Ensures the cutting area remains clean
  • Reduces the risk of clogging and re-cutting

4. Pumping and circulation

  • Too high viscosity → pump strains, energy consumption increases
  • Too low viscosity → no stable film forms in the system
The correct value ensures efficient circulation of the fluid within the machine.

5. Protective film and corrosion control
Some metalworking fluids leave a thin protective layer on the surface. Viscosity affects the layer's:

  • Thickness
  • Durability
