1. Extreme temperature
- Base oil viscosity decreases with temperature → grease may flow.
- If thickener structure breaks down → grease separates.
- Mineral greases are not as durable as synthetic-based greases, especially at high temperatures.
2. Incompatible grease mixture
- If greases with different base oils or thickeners are mixed:
- Grease hardens or separates
- Oil and thickener separate → bearing surface cannot be protected
3. Excessive mechanical stress
- High speed and heavy loads → grease is mechanically crushed or ejected
- Centrifugal effect can cause grease to flow at high speeds
4. Wrong NLGI or viscosity
- Too soft (low NLGI) grease → flows under load and speed
- Too hard (high NLGI) grease → can separate under load
5. Contamination
- Water, dust or chemicals degrade the grease structure
- Grease separates and lubricating effect is lost
6. Practical results
- Bearing surface is not adequately lubricated
- Friction and wear increase
- Bearing heats up and its life shortens
