1. Bearing speed and DN value
- DN = bearing diameter (mm) × rpm
- High speed (DN > 50,000–100,000): Low-viscosity greases are preferred (0.01–0.1 Pa·s).
- Low/medium speed: Higher viscosity greases are used.
2. Load and type
- Light load: Low or medium viscosity is sufficient
- Heavy load: Higher viscosity or EP additive greases are recommended
- Shock loads: Medium-high viscosity provides bearing protection
3. Operating temperature
- Base oil viscosity should be selected according to temperature:
- Low temperature (<0°C): Low viscosity, fluid grease
- Medium temperature (20–120°C): Medium viscosity
- High temperature (>120°C): Synthetic and low-viscosity greases are preferred
4. Environmental conditions
- If there is moisture, water, dust or chemical effects, water-resistant or specially formulated greases are needed.
- Environmental effects should also be considered in viscosity selection.
5. Practical tips
- High speed → low viscosity
- Heavy load → high viscosity
- Very high viscosity causes heating and energy loss at high speeds
- Very low viscosity provides insufficient lubrication under heavy loads
