Differences between silicone and non-silicone mold release agents

Silicone and silicone-free mold release agents are used to ensure easy demolding of parts during production; however, they have significant differences in terms of surface effects, paint/adhesion compatibility, and application areas.

Silicone mold release

Typically contains silicone-based oils.

Advantages

  • Provides very strong lubrication.
  • Easier demolding of the part.
  • Leaves a thin film on the mold surface, reducing friction.
  • Can be effective for a long time.
  • Common in plastic, rubber, and injection molding applications.

Disadvantages

  • May leave silicone residue on the surface.
  • Can cause problems if the part is to be painted, varnished, glued, or coated afterward.
  • Can create paint defects known as "fish eyes".
  • More difficult to clean.

Silicone-free mold release

Disadvantages

  • Lubricity may not be as strong as silicone-based.
  • May require more frequent application.
